DAY TRIP - Nitra

MORNING - Get to know Nitra and look up the collection of archaeological finds. Ponitrianske Múzeum (Museum), Štefánikova Ulica 1. Open: Tue-Fri 8:00-17:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-17:00. Tel: 037 741-9771. Start from Svätoplukovo Námestie, walk through Župné Námestie, Horný Palánok, and get to Pribinovo Námestie. Visit Diecézna Knižnica(Diocese library) situated in Veľký Seminár(Large seminary), Pribinovo Námestie. Tel: 037 772-1743 (book in advance). While walking down Kráľovská Cesta, enter Nitra Castle with its bishopric cathedral. Open: Mon-Fri 9:00-12:00, 13:00-17:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00. Tel: 037 772-1747. AFTERNOON - Check out the open-air museum and learn the earliest history of agriculture in Slovakia. Slovenské Poľnohospodárske Múzeum(Slovak Agricultural Museum), Dlhá 92. Open: Tue-Sun 9:00-17:00. Tel: 037 652 3359. Take a trip to a Romanesque church from the 12th century in Drážovce. Drive from the Zobor side to the Liečebný Ústav Zobor (Sanatorium Zobor) and walk along the blue trail to Drážovce.

WEEKEND TRIP - Topoľčianky

Spend a weekend in Topoľčianky surrounded by the Tríbeč and Pohronský Inovec mountains. Chateau Topoľčianky, built in the 19th century in the classical style, currently serves as a hotel and museum. The National Stud Farm Topoľčianky, founded in 1921, breeds Arabian and other horses.

Stay at the castle and walk through the large English-style park.

SATURDAY - Topoľčianky, Hrušovský Hrad

In the morning, go horseback riding at the national stud farm. Parková 13, Topoľčianky. Tel: 037 630-1613. Visit the exhibition of furniture and weapons in the museum situated in Chateau Topoľčianky. Open: Tue-Fri 9:00-15:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-16:00. In the afternoon take a trip to the 13th century ruins of Hrušovský Castle, located on the Skalka hill. Hike from Topoľčianky, following the green trail for about 3 hours. The trail offers beautiful views over the surrounding countryside.

SUNDAY - Enclosure of European Bison, Kostoľany pod Tríbečom.

Take a look at the biggest European mammal - the European bison with a length of 2.7 metres and a height of 1.9 metres. The best time to see the bison is during feeding hours, between 9:00-10:00. Drive from Topoľčianky through Žikava to the town of Lovce. Signs start from the church and lead to a parking lot situated 500 metres from the enclosure. Tel: 037 634-8128. Visit the 11th century St. George Church located in the village Kostoľany pod Tríbečom. Hiking: The yellow trail leads to the nearby hill Veľký Lysec, situated east of the village.

WEEK TRIP - Nitra region

Nitra, the region of thermal pools, is situated in the southwestern part of Slovakia and consists of seven districts. This area covers the Danube and Nitra river basins and is well-suited for agriculture, thanks to advantageous natural and geographical conditions.

SUNDAY - Levice

Visit the 840-year-old town Levice, which is dominated by ruins of the gothic Levice Castle. Look up the ethnological exhibition situated in the Dóobovský Kaštieľ(manor house). Levice Castle. Open: Mon-Fri 9:00-18:00, Sat-Sun 10:00-18:00. Tel: 036 631-2112. Continue to Brhlovce and look at the Rock Dwellings. Visit the house at 142 Šurda Street. Open: Mon, Thu, Sat, Sun 9:00-16:00. MONDAY - Nové Zámky

Swim in one of the Slovakia's biggest thermal pools. Thermal pool Vadaš, Hlavná 34, Štúrovo. Open: daily 9:00-19:00. Tel: 036 751-1410.

TUESDAY - Komárno

Have a look at the characteristic architecture of European states on Nádvorie Európy(Europe Square) in the town of Komárno. Walk through the largest fortification system in Slovakia and see the exposition of Roman stone-structured monuments. Open: Tue-Sat 9:00-17:00. Tel: 035 773-1476. Continue to visit the unique technical monument Water Mill in Kollárovo. Open: daily 10:00-19:00. Tel: 035 777-2045.

WEDNESDAY - Šaľa

Look at the sacral objects in an 11th century basilica - Church of Panna Mária, Diakovce(southwest from Šaľa). Swim in the thermal pool, located 3 kilometres from Diakovce. Open: daily 9:00-18:00. Admission: Sk20-40.

THURSDAY - Nitra

Take a trip to the ruins of the medieval Gýmeš Castle. Follow the red-marked trail from the Jelenec-Remitáč recreation centre (2 kilometres from Jelenec). Enjoy the view of the Veľký Tríbeč hill.

FRIDAY - Zlaté Moravce

Continue on to the next district. Have a walk in the botanical gardens with more than 2,000 different types of trees and bushes from all parts of the world. Arborétum Mlyňany, Tesárske Mlyňany. Open: daily 8:00-18:00. Tel: 037 633-4571.

SATURDAY - Topoľčany

Climb to Chateau Topoľčany situated over the village Podhradie. Drive by car to the pension under the castle, and then by walk about five minutes.

The blue-marked trail leads from Podhradie to the protected archaeological site Holé brehy, near which you can find the Úhrad hill with the foundations of ancient fortifications.

WEEK TRIP - Považie region

Považie region covers both banks of the river Váh. The area's rich history is documented in the castles and manor houses scattered through the Biele Karpaty, Považský Inovec and Strážovské Vrchy mountain ranges.

SUNDAY - Považská Bystrica

Visit the Orlové manor house (3 kilometres from the town centre, across the bridge on the left side), which preserves shepherd and folk traditions. Open Tue-Fri 8:00-16:00, Sat-Sun 9:00-17:00. Admission: Sk40. Tel: 042 432-3724.

Return to the bridge - don't cross it - to find the road to Považské Podhradie village. At the end of the road, a yellow-marked hike to Považský Castle ruins starts behind a church.

MONDAY - Považská Teplá

Take a trip through the narrow, canyon-like rock formations of Manínska Tiesňava, which was naturally created by water over the centuries. The green-marked trail leads to the village of Kostolec, passing over the Veľký Manín peak (891 metres) and descending to a cottage area. Relax and swim in the nearby lakes behind the Považská Bystrica-Žilina motorway.

TUESDAY - Lednické Rovne

Visit a 16th-century manor house in Lednické Rovne, situated in a large English-style park, and get to know the Slovak glassmaking industry. Open Mon-Fri 8:00-14:00. Admission: Sk10. Schreiberova ulica (near the church), Tel: 042 469-3824.

Drive to Lednica village and walk up to its castle, a mound of rock with a staircase dug in it.

WEDNESDAY - Strážov

Drive towards Ilava, turning off at the village of Zliechov. Ascend the highest peak (Strážov, 1,213 metres) in the Strážov mountain range, following the red-marked trail leading also to the Strážov waterfalls. Taste sheep-cheese products at the salaš in Zliechov.

THURSDAY - Trenčín

Visit well-preserved Trenčín Castle. Open daily 9:00-17:30. Admission: Sk43-83 (the castle tour includes performances by an historical fencing group and falconers). English-speaking guides can be ordered at Trenčianske Múzeum, Mierové nám. 46. Tel: 032 746-4431.

FRIDAY - Beckov

Visit the Beckov Múzeum. Open Tue-Sun 9:00-16:30. Admission: Sk10. Park under the castle. Tel: 032 777-7217.

Explore the ruins of Beckov Castle, erected on a 70-metre limestone rock formation. Open Tue-Sun 9:00-18:00. Admission: Sk10-20.

SATURDAY - Čachtice

Visit a Renaissance castle in Čachtice village. Open Tue-Sat 9:30-16:30. Admission: Sk10. Malinovského Ulica.
