Just north of the town of Považská Bystrica a minor road snakes away from the highway, towards Kostolec in the Strážovské vrchy mountains (which form the eastern side of this part of the Váh valley). The road leads to Manínska tiesňava, or Manín Gorge, an area of impressive rock formations, one of which is known as the 'roof of Slovakia'. There are a range of local accommodation options in the valley, ranging from pensions to chalets-for-hire, and hiking trails into the mountains. The area is protected, and local fauna include lynx, eagles and bears.
